Duke Sponsors Regional Spelling Bee

April 1, 2010

Duke spelling beeKatie Parler, 3rd grader, won George Watts Spelling Bee and went on to represent our school at the Regional Spelling Bee at Duke University in March.  Below are the results of that event from the DPS Community News page:

DPS is grateful to Duke University for bringing back an activity that generated great excitement among our elementary and middle schools.  For the first time in a number of years, DPS students participated in the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee sponsored by Duke.

Three DPS middle school students were in the Top 5 in the regional bee held on March 6 at Duke.  Amber McDonald, Carrington Middle School, came in second place.  Other DPS students in the Top 5 were Ramya Muluga, Githens Middle School, and Lucy Jayala, W.G. Pearson Middle School.  The winner, a student from Orange Charter School, will compete in the National Spelling Bee in Washington.

DPS held a Spelling Bee Pep Rally in mid-February to recognize student participants.  Dr. Phail Wynn, Duke’s Vice-President for Durham and Regional Affairs, spoke at the event.
