Peace Day Celebration – September 21

September 29, 2009

The Durham Public Schools web site recently featured some news about George Watts.  Here’s their photo and brief article:

The dove is an international symbol of peace, and this certainly wasn’t lost on the students of Watts Elementary Montessori School on Peace Day, September 21.  The students worked together with teachers to create this giant dove as the centerpiece of their Peace March from a nearby park to the school.

Students also made individual-sized doves, wore peace headbands, and gathered around the school’s Peace Pole to read poems and commemorate the day and what it stands for.

The activity served not only to remind students about the importance of getting along with people from diverse backgrounds, but also as an across-the-curriculum lesson in art, civics and English.
