Call for volunteers: 10 ways to help this Fall!

September 25, 2009

At the first PTA meeting of the year, the PTA called on parents to commit your time, your talent, and your treasure to helping George Watts.

Are you wondering exactly what that might mean?

Here are 10 specific ways that you can get involved through PTA right now and make a big difference (details below):

**** WORKING THE CONCESSION STAND AT DUKE GAMES ****

Are you able to fill cups with ice and soda? Can you push a button that squirts out cheese and pour salsa from a container to make a nacho tray? By any chance can you fill a popcorn container with popcorn? Even better, are you able to take orders, fill orders or make change?  If so, George Watts has a place for your special gift: Duke football and basketball games!

SOS or “Support Our Schools” volunteers work the concession stand at Duke home games, and George Watts takes home a share of the sales. The time commitment is around 4 hours per game.  You get to wear tennis shoes, shorts/jeans and a t-shirt. However you will be sent home if you wear Carolina Blue (no opposing team colors)!

We need 6 or 7 volunteers at each game.  Here’s the schedule:

  • Sat 9/26 Duke v Central
  • Sat 10/3 Duke v Virginia Tech
  • Sat 10/24 Duke v Maryland
  • Sat 11/14 Duke v Georgia Tech
  • Sat 11/28 Duke v Wake Forest

Can you help on any of these days?  Want to know more?  Contact Angie Douglas - angiedouglas@nc.rr.com or 479-2015

**** BUILDING STUFF FOR THE EDIBLE GARDEN ****

The Edible Garden Committee has created and is enhancing an outdoor learning environment at our school.  We could use people to help it grow.

Do you like pounding nails? Let loose your inner handyman/woman!  Currently, we need people to:

  • Help build a simple educational compost structure. This will give kids can get a hands-on lesson about the science of soil and decomposition. We already have a parent leading the effort, and she needs two or three people to help her with building a simple structure. Parents at a Chapel Hill school built one just like it, so we know we can too.
  • Build a wood structure to serve as a weather station.
  • Build some tables to serve as outdoor work stations for the kids.

Alternatively, if you’d like to make a donation to help us buy some work-station tables, that’s helpful as well.

Can you help?  Want to know more?  Contact Alice Bumgarner – alice.b@earthlink.net or 680-8674.

**** GROUNDS CLEAN-UP DAY ****

We’re looking for someone to organize a fall grounds clean-up! This is a fun event, typically on a Saturday morning, when parents, teachers, students, and friends enjoy each other’s company while tidying up the front yard and play areas, weeding beds, and planting some new flowers.  It makes a huge difference in our school’s appearance!

Can you help?  Contact Jane Brown – billandjanebrown@earthlink.net or 323-1806.

**** PARENT INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE AND FALL FESTIVAL ****

The Parent Involvement Committee puts together events which promote a sense of community between families and the school. We are a fun committee, and we need all the help we can get! Specifically, we currently need parents to:

  • Join us at our first meeting: September 29, 4pm, in Trinity Park.
  • Help organize an activity for our upcoming Fall Festival (in November) – one of the school’s most popular and fun events of the year!

Can you help?  Have any ideas about making our great school even better?  Contact Carolina Musawwir – caro_musawwir@hotmail.com or 699-1274.

**** NEW PICASSO MURAL ****

The Arts & Culture Committee supports and provides opportunities that enrich your child’s school experience through music, literature, dance, drama, and visual arts.

Currently we are looking for parents/families who would like to help get started on prepping the concrete wall adjacent to the playground.  We will use this wall for a new Picasso mural!  We need donations (monetary or other) of:

  • Concrete paint (all colors)
  • Powerwashing
  • Concrete polyurethane
  • Brushes
  • Painters tape
  • Lowe’s/Home Depot/Ace Hardward gift cards in any amount.
  • Volunteers to help do the actual labor when we get ready to paint the wall.

Can you help?  Want to know more?  Contact Kisha Daniels – kdaniels@NCCU.edu or 401-9009

**** BULLETIN BOARDS AND SOLICITING FOOD DONATIONS ****

The Communications Committee helps parents and teachers stay connected by maintaining a steady flow of information.  We are looking for several volunteers to:

  • Help organize information on the PTA bulletin boards to make it easy for parents to get the information they want and need
  • Help distribute letters to local restaurants and businesses asking for food donations.  This effort is to provide nourishing food for families and teachers to encourage everyone to come to PTA meetings and other special events.  It’s hard to pay attention at a meeting with an empty stomach!
