Sightseeing in the Hallways
What you’d see if you took a stroll through the George Watts halls…
Black History Month Displays
First – although this report comes over a month late! – in honor of Black History Month back in February, there were some really cool posters and displays.
Miss Purple created this gorgeous poster of “Merry Go Round” – a poem by Langston Hughes about Jim Crow laws and discrimination as experienced by a child. It’s hanging on the art room door – worth a special trip to see in person!
In the Media Center, Mrs. Ham set up various displays about African American authors, like the ones below, featuring Sharon Bell Mathis and Walter Dean Myers.
All over the halls, you’d see posters of famous African Americans, like this one about Wilma Rudolph:
Teacher Appreciation Displays
Second, back in late February, kids were sent home with paper sunflowers. They decorated them at home and wrote a sentence in the middle describing what they appreciate about their teacher.
The flowers that they sent back to school were gathered by a fabulously creative group of teaching students at NCCU – students of Kisha Daniels, PTA Arts & Culture Committee Chair. Working in secret, they used the flowers to develop beautiful displays of springtime goodness and cheer outside teachers’ doors.
Thank you to these little elves for helping the students express their appreciation for their teachers! They are:
- Melissa Connolly
- Abigail Corpening
- Sade Dunston
- Jennifer McLamb
- JoShanda Simmons
Edible Garden Sketches
Finally, near the school office, you’d see some the sketches that parents, students, teachers, and community friends came up with at the January 24 Edible Garden design workshop.

I hadn’t noticed Ms. Purple’s poster — that’s awesome!
