Great Human Race Raises $2200 for George Watts

We did it! On Saturday March 21, George Watts teachers, parents and students walked the 5K Great Human Race. (Actually, not everyone walked… parent Jazmin Varela ran and came in 2nd in her age group!  Congratulations, Jazmin!)

Thanks to everyone who came out on the brisk, clear morning to show their school spirit. We had about 30+ folks in our group (see names below). And we were joined by employees from Burt’s Bees, who generously gave their time and efforts to raise funds for our school.

We walked through downtown Durham, past cheerleaders, the Farmers Market and colorful downtown murals, until making it back to the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Everyone got free snacks from Parker & Otis, there was live music, kids bounced in the bounce house and were captivated by the large remote-controlled robot-dog-in-a-fire-truck (courtesy of Durham Fire Department) — all in all, a fantastic and fun morning outside!

Through the donations of participants, friends, and family, the PTA raised $800.  (And you can still donate online until about April 18 at http://www.active.com/donate/ghr2009/georgewatts.)

On top of that, Burt’s Bees raised $700 for our school, AND their CEO is going to match that with another $700!  Thank you Burt’s Bees!!

Add it all up and it comes to $2200, which will go a long way toward helping our classrooms!

BIG thanks to Coach B for the organizing, Karalyn Colopy for promoting, Claudia Curtis for goodie-bagging, and Angie Douglas and Coach B’s nephew Justin for handing out the goodies at the finish line. Without the help of parents and teachers, we simply couldn’t do this stuff. So thanks for stepping up and directly impacting our school!

And to everyone who laced up your tennis shoes, made a donation, or asked an extended family member for a donation — thank you! It ALL made a difference for our school.
