A Book in Every Bookbag! at the Book Fair, Dec 8-12

December 5, 2008

Click to download donation form to donate money to help children in need take home a new book.

The annual Book Fair at the George Watts Media Center is an exciting, colorful, book lovers’ feast. For one full week – December 8 -12, 8:45 am til 6:00 pm – the Media Center is jam-packed with hundreds of books for sale, fiction and non-fiction, on all sorts of subjects, in every price range.

Here’s how parents can be a great help:

  • Donate a few dollars for a child in need at George Watts to buy a book. To do this, download a donation form (a blank gift certificate)Print it out and return it with your donation (make checks payable to “George Watts PTA”) in your child’s folder, or bring it to Mrs. Ham if you go to the Book Fair yourself. (Donation forms are also available at the Book Fair and on the PTA bulletin board by the carpool entrance to the school.)  We hope that through our donations, we can ensure that students in every classroom all have the same opportunities to take home a new book at their reading level. Says one George Watts teacher: Every year I worry about my kids who can’t afford a book at the book fair. There are usually a few $1 books, but it would be nice for them to have a choice of books. It would be great to have a donation pot for kids who don’t have money for books. On the last day of the book fair, teachers could send those kids who didn’t get one to the book fair to get a $1 to $3 book from the fair.

Working together, we hope to put “a book in every bookbag!”

  • Volunteer Dec 8-12 with sales and helping children select items. You can email Mrs. Ham (kay.ham@dpsnc. net), call her at the school (560-3947) or just drop by the Media Center to talk to her. The Book Fair runs every day and she could use an extra pair of hands almost any time.
  • Purchase a book as a gift for your child’s class or another class. Each teacher makes a wish list, which Mrs. Ham will have posted at the Fair.
  • Shop at the Book Fair! Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons by Ann RinaldiBooks make great gifts, and the Fair has so much to choose from!  Last year, my toddler grabbed a random paperback off the shelf and, before I noticed it, manhandled it enough to wreck the cover.  So I felt obliged to buy it (although Mrs. Ham assured me that there is no you-break-it-you-bought-it policy in effect!).  It turned out to be a book that looked interesting to me, as an adult, not just a parent.  I ended up reading it (by myself) and loving it!  (Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons: The Story of Phillis Wheatley by Ann Rinaldi).  My point is that there is sure to be something to please every child, and perhaps every person, at the Book Fair. Parents are welcome to come with their child during his/her scheduled time (see schedule below) to purchase or any time during the day Monday through Friday from 8:45 am to 6:00 pm. Exception: Wed., Dec. 10 – 12:15-1:30.

When you buy a book at the Book Fair, you’re contributing to the school’s main source of funds for maintaining and improving our library.  Books don’t last forever – kids lose them, dogs chew on them, pages get ripped and scribbled on, or (a book’s best hope) they simply get dated.  The Media Center needs money to keep more books coming to the shelves and to try to stay up to date with technology.

However you can help with the Book Fair is very much appreciated.  Thank you!
