Excellence in Art: Upper El Wins 1st Prize at State Fair

For the second year in a row, George Watts artists won first prize at the North Carolina State Fair! Art Teacher Ms. Barnes (aka Miss Purple) selected artwork by six Upper El students to enter in the Arts & Photography competition, Elementary School (K-5) category.  It was judged against entries from public and private elementary schools all across the state.  First prize includes a blue ribbon, bragging rights, and a cash award of $650!  Ms. Barnes will put the money towards art supplies for the school.

This year’s winning entries are self-portraits, created in a very interesting way.  First the students drew charcoal self-portraits. Then they selected a famous portrait that they liked and recreated it.  Next they carefully cut out and removed the famous face, leaving the hair, glasses, clothing, and background. Finally they cut the face out of their own self-portrait and inserted it into the famous portrait, with striking results!

Ms. Barnes‘ students undertake complex projects requiring many weeks of focus and hard work.  Work started at the beginning of the school year is not ready for the State Fair in October.  So Ms. Barnes plans far in advance, saving 4th graders’ projects from the end of the school year and entering them the following fall, when the artists are in 5th grade.

Last year, the first year that George Watts entered the competition, our students won first place with their renditions of rain forest animals.  This spring, students will produce two major projects: 1)  a landscape, as seen in through the windshield and the rearview mirror of a car, and 2) a President Obama inaugural montage.  Ms. Barnes will select six 4th grade students’ work on one of the projects for entry into the 2009 State Fair competition.  So plan to visit the Arts & Photography display at the fair next October!

Excelencia en Arte: 4o/5o Grado Gana el 1o Premio en la Feria del Estado

Por el segundo año, ¡algunos artistas de George Watts han ganado el primer premio en la Feria del Estado de Carolina del Norte!  La Sra. Barnes, la maestra de arte que llamamos Miss Purple, seleccionó obras de arte por seis estudiantes para presentar en el concurso de Artes y Fotografía, en la categoría de escuelas elementarias (K-5).  Fueron juzgadas contra otras obras de escuelas elementarias de todas partes del estado. El primer premio incluye un listón azul, mucho orgullo, y un premio de $650 en efectivo, para materiales artísticas para la escuela.
Las obras que ganaron son auto-retratos, creadas de manera muy interesante.  Primero, los estudiantes hicieron auto-retratos de carbón.  Entonces escogieron un retrato famoso que les gustaba, y lo recrearon.  Entonces cortaron y quitaron la cara famosa del papel, dejando el pelo, los anteojos, la ropa, y el trasfondo.  Finalmente, pusieron sus propias imágenes dentro de los retratos famosos, ¡con resultados sorprendentes!
Los estudiantes hacen proyectos muy complejos.  Los que empiezan en agosto no están listos para la Feria del Estado en octubre, así que la Sra. Barnes guarda los proyectos de los estudiantes en 4o grado al final del año escolar para ponerlos en el concurso durante el otoño siguiente, cuando los artistas están en 5o grado.

El año pasado nuestros estudiantes ganaron el primer premio también.  Esta primavera, los estudiantes producirán dos obras: 1) un paisaje, visto en por el parabrisas y el retrovisor de un carro, y 2) un montaje inaugural del Presidente Obama. La Sra. Barnes seleccionará las obras de uno de estos proyectos para presentar en el concurso de la Feria del Estado de 2009.  Vayan a visitar la exhibición de Artes y Fotografía en la Feria del Estado en octubre, 2009.  ¿Podrá ganar nuestra escuela por tercera vez?

En la entrada de la escuela, puede ver las obras de arte que ganaron.  Gracias a la Sra.
