Greensboro, Here We Come!
On Wednesday, October 8, all of the Lower Elementary classes – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders – are going to the Greensboro Children’s Museum.
This is a very exciting opportunity. At $20 per student, it’s an expensive trip, but an investment that should be worth every penny. Why?
- Kids will travel outside of Durham and expand their knowledge of North Carolina.
- The trip will include lots of hands-on, interactive learning.
- Kids will do one of two cool programs on important themes: our environmental “footprint” and how communities function.
The activities of the trip support our Montessori curriculum AND the NC Standard Course of Study objectives. Students in multiple grades will be working together to solve and discuss problems as a community.
In addition to exploring all the cool exhibits in the museum, the students will participate in thought-provoking, in-depth programs that will last up to 3 hours. Each class will be assigned to ONE of the following two programs – if only there were enough time to do both!!
Green Footprint
Kids will investigate the impact we have on Earth’s natural resources. The planet’s precious treasures were intended for our consumption, but are we consuming too much? This eye-opening Explore-A-Tour will guide children to think carefully about the footprint they leave on our planet and help them to make a positive step for future generations.
Our Town Mystery!
GCM’s small community, Our Town, is in chaos! Overnight all the citizens disappeared and we would like your class to not only solve the mystery of the missing townspeople, but also fill in for the missing workers of Our Town. This exciting program encourages children to ask questions, make and confirm predictions, compare and contrast roles in a community, and be responsible decision makers.
More About the Money
Traveling to Greensboro means chartering buses and paying for lots of gasoline. $20 per student is a lot of money, but not a reason for anyone to miss out. Here’s how every child can participate:
- Any families who can afford it are invited to send in extra money, to help cover the costs for families who can’t afford it. Any donation will help and is greatly appreciated.
- Families that have multiple children in Lower Elementary classes are expected to pay for ONLY ONE CHILD.
- Families who need assistance with paying for the field trip can send a note or talk to their child’s teacher. All children will go on the field trip as long as they have a permission slip.
- The PTA has some funds in its budget (an equal amount for every grade level) to help cover the costs of field trips.
